The difference between periodontitis and gingivitis is:

.The site of inflammation: gingivitis only affects the gums, while periodontitis involves damage to more than three periodontal tissues including the gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone.

.Symptoms and consequences: gingivitis causes changes in the texture, shape, color, and depth of the gingival sulcus but does not lead to a reduction in gingival attachment level, and generally has a good prognosis.

.Periodontitis, on the other hand, may cause inflammation in the alveolar bone and periodontal pockets, leading to destruction of the supporting tissues around the teeth. As the inflammation gradually worsens, it may ultimately result in tooth loss.

.Treatment methods: gingivitis can be treated by removing dental plaque, frequent rinsing, brushing teeth, etc., while periodontitis may require pharmacological treatment or surgical intervention.
